Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is content at the club despite being approached by Liverpool as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp, according to The Mirror.
Last month, Klopp announced to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season, and Alonso quickly became the favourite for the position.
Liverpool is set to appoint Klopp's successor in the summer, and there has been communication between the club and Alonso to determine the Spaniard's interest in the role, as reported by the publication.
However, the report also mentions that Alonso is satisfied with his current position at Leverkusen and aspires to lead them to their first-ever Bundesliga title. In an interview following Klopp's announcement, Alonso seemed to distance himself from the managerial position at Liverpool.
"I was surprised by Jurgen's news. I have huge respect for Jurgen and Liverpool. At the moment I am really happy here and enjoying my work. Each day and game is a challenge. We are in an intense and beautiful journey here at Leverkusen," he said.
"Speculation is normal, but I have great respect and admiration for what Jurgen has done at Liverpool in the last nine years, and how he's done it. He has a connection with the fans, he's done a great job, but my focus is here at Bayer Leverkusen.
"I have great motivation to do a good job here, I'm very happy with the team, with the club, with everything, so that's my focus. My focus isn't on May, it's on tomorrow ahead of our game against Gladbach and helping my players to be ready. But what I will say is it was surprising what happened at Liverpool with Jurgen leaving."
After his tenure as a player at Liverpool, Alonso initiated his managerial career with Real Sociedad B. The spell endured for three years, during which he achieved a winning rate of just over 40 per cent before departing in May 2022.
Five months later, Alonso secured his inaugural senior managerial position at Bayer Leverkusen, guiding his team to the Europa League semi-finals in his first season. In May 2023, the Spaniard inked a new three-year contract with the German club, and they have made an impressive start to the current campaign.
Most recently, Leverkusen clinched a tense 3-2 victory over Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal, extending their unbeaten streak to an impressive 30 games in all competitions. Alonso's side is moving onward and upward, having also advanced to the last 16 of the Europa League after winning every match in their group.
